Hair Extensions And Your Natural Hair

May 15th, 2008 CarolynClayton Posted in Culture | No Comments »

The maintenance and the styling of hair extensions are two factors that are surrounded by negative stereotypes. The freedom that you actually get with hair extensions is continually overlooked; you can do a lot more with them in your hair than is realised and the maintenance required isn’t some complex chore but more like how you would treat your natural hair.

There is only one aspect that comes to mind where hair extensions are involved and this is adding colour to your hair or having touch-ups done on your existing colour. As you may or may not be aware you are unable to place colour on your hair extensions due to the fact that they have already undergone an intense chemical process to get them to the colour that they are now so adding more colour to them would cause damage and has the potential to cause your extensions to fall out. If your natural hair requires a touch up you should have this carried out before your extensions are placed in as doing this afterwards will become difficult and will leave your hair uneven as you wont be able to place any dye near to your extension bonds. It is highly important that you don’t get any chemicals in the bonds of your extensions unless you want them to fall out.

Ok so we have covered the colouring of your hair, now onto the styling. You are able to style your hair with extensions in the same way that you would style your natural hair. You are able to use appliances such as hair straighteners and curling tongs as long as your extensions are made from human hair; if your extensions are synthetic it is not advised to place heat on them but if they are human hair you can blow dry, straighten or curl, you can style them in anyway that you wish without causing damage as long as you don’t directly disturb the bonds.

If you’re natural hair is either permed or naturally curly you can still get hair extensions. This is because as well as coming in a wide range of colours your hair extensions are also available in a range of textures; you are able to buy your extensions already curled so that it is in keeping with your natural hair.

One of the main problems that can arise with your hair extensions is the fact that they can tangle easily. The easiest ways of stopping this from happening is by using a wide toothed comb to de-tangle your hair. Also it is a good idea to run a mild mousse/conditioner through it using your fingers. One more way of stopping it from tangling is by loosely tying it back when you are sleeping.

If you want your hair extensions to last you will have to treat them with respect. This involves a good aftercare routine as well as giving your extensions regular maintenance. This will ensure that both your natural hair and extensions are kept looking great.

The History Of Gift Giving At Christmas

May 15th, 2008 BeverlySugarman Posted in Culture | No Comments »

Giving gifts has been a tradition among human beings since ancient times. Many historians believe that this practice led to the development of the barter system, which was the economic basis for many societies. Land that was passed from one generation to another was considered a gift, as well as offerings made to various gods. The Romans and Greeks considered any beneficial occurrences were “gifts for the gods” while the leaders of different countries that were part of the Roman Empire sent “gifts” or “tributes” regularly to the emperor in Rome.

Many ancient peoples often exchanged gifts during different festival days throughout the year. The Romans exchanged gifts on New Year’s Day in celebration of the winter solstice. Some of these gifts included coins to represent prosperity, pastries to represent happiness, and lamps to provide light on one’s journey through life.

The idea that gift giving and love are closely associated developed alongside the growth of the Christian religion. The main theological basis of this religion is based on the fact that God himself gave humanity “His only begotten Son”, Jesus Christ, who was a “gift” to mankind. At the time of the Crucifixion, Jesus is said to have died “for our sins” because of the love that he felt for all humanity, his “gift” being his own life which was given to aid mankind on the path to salvation.

Even at the time of His birth, Jesus Christ was associated with gift giving. When He was born, the three Wise Men brought gifts to the newborn babe to honor Him. These gifts were gold, frankincense, and myrrh, gifts that would normally have been given to a king. Frankincense was a base element used to make fragrances and perfumes, myrrh was used in anointing oils, and gold was as valuable then as it is today. These items may also have had a symbolic meaning-frankincense was associated with the priest hood, gold was the symbol of earthly kings, and myrrh was a symbol of death, as this incense was often burned at funerals. The idea of giving gifts to newborns may have started with this Bible story, as well as the giving of gifts at Christmas.

The idea of gifts at Christmas developed differently as Christianity spread into various countries. In England, Father Christmas was responsible for delivering the gifts, while in France this was the work of Pere Noel. In Italy, it was Babbo Natale who acted as what we would refer to as Santa Claus, although the gift giver was another character named La Befana. The belief was that La Befana became lost on her way to deliver gifts to the Christ child and began delivering gifts to all youngsters. The American version of Santa Claus was developed in the 1880s by cartoonist Thomas Nash and has become a recognizable symbol of gift giving worldwide.

Today, while gifts are given for a variety of holidays and special occasions, the largest of these gift- giving occasions is and will probably remain to be the Christmas holiday. After all, as far as Christians are concerned, this holiday was the time that the people of the world received the greatest “gift” of love-Jesus Christ.

We have baby gift baskets that are cute and practical. Perfect for the newborn and new moms. For more information, visit this article on baby gift baskets.

Redefining Tex-Mex Food

May 15th, 2008 AnnieDubois Posted in Culture | No Comments »

What is it about Tex-Mex food that is so appealing? Depending on whom you ask, you will find a variety of responses. Generally, this will also closely parallel what the person happens to think makes great cuisine of this nature. Mexican foods are a delicious and wholesome cuisine, and the definitions of authentic often clash with conventional and new. However you look at the big picture, no one will deny the delicious benefits of choosing this “south of the border” cuisine for your own.

Authentic Mexican foods are extremely healthy and filled with chilies, corn, and meat. However, add in a few of the northern favorites and you have cheeses, sour creams, and a lot of frying involved with delicious Tex-Mex food. The line between authentic and mixed cuisine becomes blurred, and opinions will vary depending on who you ask and what they believe.

Tex-Mex food is, by definition, a scrumptious mix of authentic Mexican foods and southern United States foods. Most commonly, this is cuisine that has a strong home in Texas and even some of the neighboring states. In fact, much of Mexico can be found serving this mouth watering cuisine.

However, you will find that some people have interesting thoughts on what Tex-Mex food really is…

Anything that is “chicken fried” can be considered this type of cuisine. Have you ever dipped in an egg mix and then coated in a seasoned flour mixture a steak, a cube steak, or even a zucchini? Well, this is often considered “chicken fried”. Serve with a side order of mashed potatoes and some favorite vegetable dish and you have a meal fit for a king!

Anything that is served with jalapeno peppers is considered this type of cuisine. One thing is for sure, jalapeno peppers are a vital part of anything you would consider fit to be called Tex-Mex food. That spicy tang of sweetness is something that makes any meal complete, and even various types of peppers will be a unique flavor accenting any dish.

Anything with a tortilla involved is this type of cuisine. Tortillas are a great addition to any meal; you can even use tortillas for desserts! This is one versatile food staple that is healthier than bread and so much healthier. Even tortilla wraps have invaded our lives and are available in fast food establishments around the globe.

Regardless of how you define it, this is one type of cuisine that will be with us for a lifetime. One thing I hear people ask a lot is, “How do I know the difference between authentic Mexican foods and this other more Americanized cuisine?” The truth is that, sometimes, it is more difficult than ever to distinguish between the two.

One would like to think you find traditional and authentic foods in Mexican food, but the truth is that this is not always a perfect way to tell the difference. Tex-Mex food is more popular than ever, and you will find that the line has blurred between authentic and modernized. What has not changed is the delicious benefits you get when you choose this cuisine for yourself and your family.

Why Use Any Other Service - Online Dating Has It All

May 15th, 2008 MarkDate Posted in Dating | No Comments »

Did you think that the more online dating sites you’re on the better the outcome would be for you? Well, think again. Here is a great example of too much of a good thing.

A really close friend of mine did just that. In fact, she had her profile on seven sites. She was assuming that being on more online dating sites would increase her chances of finding Mr Right. However, she was always complaining about how she had to reply to too many emails and worse, she would always get confused about which potential date was best and who was who.

At first I admired her for being so dedicated but after a while she was getting stressed out and she admitted to having made some poor choices due to getting so confused and busy keeping up with the replies. Why? Well once you get involved with an online dating site (and I recommend you do), you have to keep your profile up to date. That includes your picture – a must have (sometimes several pictures) with most memberships. You can imagine amending and thinking about the changes and work that goes into changing those details over and over. It depicts a nightmare for me. I’d have issues keeping three online dating sites up to date never mind seven…whew!

Well, here’s what happened. She’s such a good friend, I decided to do some investigative research (look around a bit on the net). I was pleased to discover that a combination of the latest findings indicate the most successful outcomes from online dating sites come from users who commit to just the one online dating site. They dedicate all their attention to that one online dating site. They also do some research before selecting the online dating site that suits them best. That makes sense…right!

The big plus here is that people who are interested in you know where to find you. If they find you on too many online dating sites, well, that can add a desperation element to your profile. You don’t want that!

You can also fish around to see how many people are registered with the online dating site and what kind of quality control they have in place. Don’t join the first online dating site that you come to because the chances are you could do better. Good online dating sites are often promoted well and your single friends may well be able to recommend one they like.

Whatever you decide to do, don’t be like my friend and join a whole bunch of online dating sites. You’ll come unstuck and lose focus (like she did for a while). I showed her what I had learned and she decided to close all of her memberships and start again. Guess what! She is now dating with a clear head and as a result has met some really hot guys.

By the way, this same information applies to guys as well. In fact, most of the people interviewed were in fact guys which shows that the same rule applies to both sexes….I didn’t tell her that part - she’d kill me if she knew.

Sticking with one online dating site will save you time, money and trouble. Your chances of finding a partner are actually much higher when you stay with the one online dating site. Ditch all those other memberships now.

Dating After 30

May 15th, 2008 AlexRocklane Posted in Dating | No Comments »

No matter what their reasons are, a greater number of people today are finding themselves single after the age of thirty than ever before. One reason may be that our career-driven society leaves little time for a social life. We’re told to graduate high school, go to college, get our degree, maybe get another degree, find a successful job and then worry about a relationship. Compare that to 50 and 60 years ago when the norm was to get married right after high school and it’s no wonder that things are so different now. Women used to go to college to find a husband, now it is almost taboo to settle down and have children before you’ve established your career.

Chances are that the reasons you are over thirty and still single are the very same things that will make it difficult to date now. It is not always about finding the right person, you also have to be the right person. As hard as it may be to admit, dating after 30 may require some behavior modification on your part because, as you can see, whatever you are doing right now is not working. If you are a workaholic whose job has always come before their personal life, it may be time to reevaluate your priorities. If it is a fear of commitment that has been keeping you from having successful relationships, until you address that problem it won’t get any easier.

Dating is difficult at any age, no one is arguing that point. Still, it does seem that once you enter the third decade of your life the singles pool starts to empty out a bit. Some people think they have to start lowering their standards, but there are still a lot of great single people your age if you know where to look. You are still allowed to be just as picky and discerning as you were in your twenties.

There are a lot of reasons that dating in your 30’s can actually be the best time to date. Men tend to be more established and stable by the time they’ve reached their thirties, not to mention mature. You have a better chance of finding a man that actually wants to go to a wine tasting with you instead of convincing you to drive him and his buddies to the Incubus concert. Women in their thirties are often much more confident and independent than they were ten years ago. Nothing against the twenty-something girls, but they can often be a little needy, which is great if that’s what you’re looking for but a nightmare if you’re not.

It’s the age of the internet so you had to know this was going to come up. Online dating is bigger and broader than it’s ever been before. Though people still meet up randomly in chat rooms and hit it off, now there are personality profiles and background checks involved. Blind dating has gone high tech, but don’t get so caught up that you forget people have been meeting without the internet for centuries.

Good old-fashioned dating is a lot less common these days, especially as technology becomes a larger part of our lives. There are still ways to meet a prospective mate face to face, starting with first names instead of screen names. You can volunteer for your favorite charity, hospital or organization and it serves several purposes. Not only will it surround you with people who share your interests, but you’re giving something back to your community in the process. Sports leagues can also be great ways to meet people if you’re the athletic type. Even when you’re not meeting someone special you’re having a good time.

Whether you have been out of the game for a while and you’re returning or you’re a regular that just hasn’t found that special someone yet, dating can be tough. It’s basically trying people on for size and seeing how they fit. You rarely ever find perfectly fitting jeans in the first pair you try on, they may not even be in that store. The best thing you can do is just enjoy the shopping trip and when you least expect it the right ones will find you.

Single Again After 30

May 15th, 2008 AlexRocklane Posted in Dating | No Comments »

There are of different reasons one might find oneself single beyond the age of thirty. It could be that you have simply never made the time to seek out the right person, or maybe you spent the better part of your twenties chasing after the one you thought was the one. Divorce is a big reason many people are finding themselves single again in their thirties, which can make it even worse. Not only are you getting over a heartbreaking ordeal, now you are expected to start dating after being part of a couple for so long? It’s really no wonder why so many people have a hard time getting “back out there”.

Being single is difficult enough the first time around. Being single again after being in a relationship for a long time is even more difficult. When you add those two factors and throw in the basic difficulties of dating after the age of thirty you probably won’t want to leave your house. Once you pinpoint the things about dating that you find worrisome, you can face them head on and before you know it you’ll be enjoying yourself with someone special.

For the post-thirty demographic, dating has its share of challenges. For one thing, the number of single people starts to dwindle as you get older and your options appear to get fewer and farther between. If you happen to have come out of a marriage with a couple of kids in your wagon, it adds another layer of complication. You want to find someone that could potentially love your children as much as you do but it is difficult to find. One positive part about dating at this age is that your peers are much more likely to have kids too. You always want to find someone that shares your interests–your most important ones!

Chances are pretty good that dating is much different now than it was the last time you were single. Simply the advances in technology that have been made in the last five to ten years have opened up a world of possibilities for dating. You don’t have to go out on blind dates fixed up by your friends if you don’t want to. There is something to be said for finding your own dates, and that may include joining an internet dating sight or two. Speed dating is a pretty popular trend, but it isn’t for everyone.

If you are looking for more conventional ways to meet people, don’t worry, those still exist too. Throw a party and ask your friends–single or married–to bring a few single friends and extend the invites a little beyond the people you know directly. You will tend to be much more comfortable on your own turf and being the host or hostess gives you an automatic conversation. It would be rude not to greet every attractive member of the opposite sex, wouldn’t it? If hosting isn’t your forte, join a book club, wine tasting group, volunteer organization or whatever piques your interests. You end up having a good time whether you meet anyone or not.

Dating after thirty is not quite the nightmare that people might make it out to be. This is a time in your life when you know more about yourself than you did ten years ago. Take a moment to look back at the youngster you were the last time you were single. Think about how much you have grown and learned, and be glad for that knowledge. You are much more likely to pick the right partner if you first know who you are.

Loving Mexican Food Spices

May 14th, 2008 AnnieDubois Posted in Cooking | No Comments »

When you think of delicious cuisine, if you happen to enjoy great Mexican food, spices are definitely going to be a part of your meal. A good spice, by today’s standards, is often a spice that is dried and put into a can. Purchasable at your local grocer, that spice is going to offer a flavor similar to the fresh and authentic taste you would expect. In fact, many people simply do not know what it is to have the fresh and authentic taste of some of the most delicious flavors in the world.

There are many Mexican food spices available today. The most common are probably chili powder, cumin, and oregano. However, there are many other types of spice available with a long range of benefits and tastes.

Oregano grown and harvested in Mexico is absolutely divine. This earthy spice adds its earthiness to any meal. Many people may be familiar with Mediterranean oregano which adds immense flavor to Italian cuisine, but the oregano from Mexico is in a class all of its own and no less appreciated.

Cumin just happens to be one of those herbs that have been around since the beginning of time. The origin is believed to be in the middle east, but the reality is no one can know for sure. The bitter taste adds a toasty flavor popular when it comes to cuisine from Mexico. Cumin is an extremely hearty herb with just a little bit going a long way!

Everyone has heard of chili powder, and this is a blended mix often considered a staple when it comes to Mexican food spices. This blend of oregano, cumin, and chilies can be added to just about anything offering a spicy taste of perfection. Most often, chili powder is used to spice up meat, but many families love this flavor on vegetables too.

Another spice similar to chili powder would be Chipotle. What is chipotle? Chipotle is a dried jalapeno that has also been smoked to perfection. Chipotle is definitely popular, and you will find this spice goes great in many salsas and sauces. Also, chipotle is a primary spice found in the marinade Adobo.

Of course, not all Mexican food spices are as well recognized as chipotle, chili powder, cumin, or oregano!

Epazote is an authentic spice form Mexico that should be used sparingly. In large enough quantities, epazote can be poisonous. However, epazote is also used to flavor beans and it will also calm the intestinal side effects of a large dose of delicious beans.

A few other flavors you may find appealing for your next meal could be anise, cinnamon, cocoa, and/or cloves. These spicy and sweet ingredients are not delicious, but they are filled with the healthy things you and your family will appreciate.

Choosing to eat the best in authentic Tex-Mex or Mexican cuisine will often lead you face to face with some of the spices and herbs you see here. However, because this is such a diverse culture, the truth is that you will find much more. Eating good starts with knowing what herbs and spices are most beneficial to your taste buds as well as your overall health.
